In the midst of the constant babble and singing "Aaaaahhhhhhhhh," J says a few recognizable words here and there. When we hear anything that remotely sounds like a word, we repeat it back to him to encourage him to again repeat it.
His first word was definitely "Hi." Followed by "mama" and "dada". Though mama is usually mamamamamama (6 ma's).
We also now hear "up" though that is usually putting his arms up in the air.
The most recent recognizable and consistent word is "aiger" (tiger minus the T), which is the name of one of our cats. He actually only says that for the particular cat who is named that, so he recognizes that the smaller girl kitty is called something else.
His sign language skills are also improving. He finally mastered "more" and I'm working on eat, cereal and drink, as well as night night and book next. He recognizes those, along with the word said, but does not do them back for me. Milk, and byebye are his other ones that he actually does.
We're gearing up for family visiting, his birthday and the birthday party this week. Exciting times in the life of a so-close-you-can-almost-touch-it 1 year old.
